Daryl & Yvonne Clendenin, Caller/Cuer

Daryl Clendenin is a caller, Accredited caller coach and square & round dance music producer. He has been a Club Caller for many clubs in the Portland, Oregon area, including Rivergate Stompers, Columbians, Bachelor & Bachelorettes and Swap & Swing in The Dalles. He spent 16 years putting the snowbirds (and some local folks) through their paces in Apache Junction and Mesa, Arizona and traveling internationally. He has held numerous positions at Callerlab, conducted many caller-seminars, hosted several world-tours and been featured at many State Festivals.
Daryl and Yvonne have been dancing since 1967. He has been calling since 1969 and she has cued since 2003. He is currently the caller for the Hillsboro Hoedown club in Aloha, Oregon. They consider square dancers their extended family and the activity is their life.

Ethel is in the Eager Beavers' fall, 2007 square dance class. George Clark is the instructor. She has wanted to learn to square dance since she was in junior high. Her late husband, like so many men, was not eager to try it. Ethel did lots of roller-skating and dancing on skates at Oaks Park over the last 20 years. She's glad to finally have the chance to get involved in the square dance world.

Carmen & Harlan are members of the Coast Swingers Square Dance Club in Garibaldi, Oregon. Carmen square danced at age 16 with the Corvallis Squares and then with the OSU Promenaders in college. Roger Putzler was the OSU Promenaders caller. Then for 32 years, she didn't dance. In 2004, she brushed up her memory of squares and took round dance lessons. Harlan did his first square dancing in 2005 in the Albany Timber Twirlers beginner's lessons. He hasn't tackled rounds yet. Carmen & Harlan were married in May, 2006

RUTH CANBY (CUER)

Ruth is now, and always has been, the cuer for the Sunset Promenaders. She and her late husband, Mel Canby, a square dance caller, started the Sunset Promenaders in 1985. Ruth started square dancing in the late '70's and rounds a year later. Not long after that, in 1979, she took cueing lessons from Coco Sutton and the rest, as they say, is history. Looks like Ruth and Mel jumped into dancing with both feet about 1977.
NORM* & MARCI YODER (*CALLER)

Norm & Marci took square dance lessons from Chuck Rogers at the Valley Squares AND from George Kettner in 1973, then round dance lessons from Bill Allen in 1974. By 1976 Norm was club caller for the Bustle Bumpers at the Portland Square Dance Center, 50th & Kelly. He called for them for 3 years. They just ASSUMED he'd cue and teach rounds. That's what all the callers did back then. SO, he had to jump in and learn how to do it. Turns out, Round Dancing was one of their biggest success stories. 25-couple classes were the norm for Norm and Marci at the crest of the dancing wave.
Norm called for the Hillsboro Hoedown from 1979 until 2003, 24 years! He was on the program at the Pentiction Peach Festival in Penticton, B.C. (Canada) in 1979 and missed calling at that festival only twice during the next 30 years. In the midst of all that, He and Marci started a caller's club, the Plus Knights, in 1984. It's still going strong.
Norm sampled the National Caller limelight in 1990 when he accepted an offer to be the featured caller at the Harvest Hoedown Weekend in Marysville, California. That involved calling at mainstream through advance levels, conducting styling clinics, etc. Afterward, he and Marci discussed it and decided they didn't want to invest the time and strain of doing that on a routine basis. Too bad for the dancers in the rest of the nation, but very good for us here in the great Pacific Northwet. We wound up with an A-Number-One caller who is in town a lot and SELDOM calls "relay the deucy" from a "thar star."
Norm says' "Square Dancing has been SUCH a blessing. So many neat people. So much fun over the years."

Bill and "Charlie" learned to square dance in 1975 with the Y-East Whirlers in Hood River, Oregon. The caller was Bob Tallman. They danced with the Dudes & Dolls (Gene Noble) and the B-Sharps (Larry Wood). They took round dance lessons in 1976, then intermediate lessons in 1980 from Bob & Mary Ann Rother and Gene & Lois Noble. They started snow-birding to Arizona in 1985 and increased that to half-years in 1991. They still round dance with Kay & Joy Read, Wayne & Barbara Blackford and George & Pam Hurd in Mesa, Arizona.

CHARTER MEMBERS, B&B's. In the early '60's, some clubs excluded solo dancers. Arlene, Joyce and three other dancers; Tom Powers, Patricia Clark and Bill Griffith started a singles club called the Bachelor and Bachelorettes. This group was also instrumental in starting the Rose Festival dances. The U.S. Navy Shore Patrol had to rescue Arlene from across the freeway at one of those early Rose Festival dances.

Lately, Winter months find us in Arizona, dancing to the Blackfords, Hurds, Kruegers and others. Summer months might find us dancing almost anywhere. Louise began squares and rounds with the Fun Lovers in 1974, and also danced with B&B's, Single Squares, B-Sharps, and was a charter member of Spares & Pairs; round danced with Bob & Maryann Rother, Dan Sobala, Dennis Smith, and Bud Stolz. Leonard started squares in 1970 but didn't tackle rounds in earnest until 1987.
